Endometriosis- creating awareness Is it on the rise?  Do you suffer from uncontrollable pain during menses? So much so that you have to skip classses or work? You take the pain killer and get back to your routine, thinking its normal to have pain during periods? Well it may not be normal and you may be suffering from Endometriosis !! Endometriosis is a disease where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, causing pain and/or infertility.Endometriosis affects roughly 10%  of reproductive age women and girls globally. It is a chronic disease associated with severe, life-impacting pain during periods, sexual intercourse, bowel movements and/or urination, chronic pelvic pain, abdominal bloating, nausea, fatigue, and sometimes depression, anxiety, and infertility. The variable and broad symptoms of endometriosis mean that healthcare workers do not easily diagnose it and many individuals suffering from it have limited awareness of the condition. This can cause a lengthy delay between onset of symptoms and diagnosis. Not much is known what causes it, but besides hormonal causes, altered immunity, genetics, and potentially environmental contaminants like Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals EDC's are implicated in its development. (visit endocrine.org for more information on EDC)At present, there is no known cure for endometriosis, and treatment is usually aimed at controlling symptoms. At present there is no known way to prevent endometriosis, only by enhancing awareness followed by early diagnosis and effective treatment of signs and symptoms of endometriosis we may  slow the progression of disease successfully!
