Why Tdap is required during Pregnancy?

The Tdap vaccine stands for Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis.

It's a combination vaccine that protects against three serious diseases:

Tetanus: A bacterial infection that causes painful muscle stiffness and spasms, often entering the body through cuts or wounds.

Diphtheria: A bacterial infection that affects the respiratory system, causing symptoms like sore throat, fever, and swollen glands.

Pertussis (Whooping Cough): A highly contagious respiratory infection that causes severe coughing spells, which can be especially dangerous for infants.

Why is it recommended during pregnancy?

The Tdap vaccine is recommended during pregnancy, specifically between 27-36 weeks of gestation, to protect both the mother and the baby.

When a pregnant woman receives the Tdap vaccine, her body produces antibodies against pertussis, which are then passed to the baby through the placenta

This provides the newborn with some short-term protection against whooping cough until they are old enough to receive their own vaccination at around 2 months of age.

This protection is crucial because whooping cough can be life-threatening for young infants. By vaccinating during pregnancy, the risk of the baby contracting whooping cough in their first few months of life is significantly reduced.
