We often take medicines like PAN-40, RAB-20, Nexpro-40 for quick relief from acidity or heartburn. These belong to a group called PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors) — commonly known as “acid-relief pills.” They block acid secretion in the stomach and give fast comfort. But when used for a long time without real need, they may silently harm your body. What really happens Your stomach acid isn’t just for burning; it helps digest food and absorb nutrients such as Vitamin B12, Iron, Calcium, and Magnesium. When acid is constantly blocked, the absorption of these nutrients decreases — leading to tiredness, weakness, bone and nerve problems, and long-term deficiencies. When PPIs are useful These medicines are truly needed in certain conditions — such as peptic ulcers, H. pylori infection, severe gastritis or reflux, or when taking strong painkillers (NSAIDs). But for routine acidity or mild heartburn, lifestyle changes often work better and safer.

Simple tips:

Avoid late-night heavy meals.

Eat smaller, lighter portions.

Limit spicy, oily food, tea, and coffee.

Don't lie down soon after eating.

Maintain a healthy weight.

Takeaway:

Acid is not your enemy; it’s essential for digestion. PPIs are good when truly required — but unnecessary, long-term use may cause silent internal damage. Always use them under medical advice.
