Ankle sprain is also known as twisted or rolled ankle.
A sprained ankle occurs when the ligaments are forced beyond their normal range of motion. Most sprained ankles involve injuries to the ligaments on the outer side of the ankle.
Grading Of Ankle Sprain:
Grade 1
- It results from mild stretching of the ligaments.
- Patient feels mild swelling.
-There is no Joint Instabilty.
Grade 2
- It involves an incomplete tear of the ligament.
- Patient feels pain, swelling and tenderness.
- There is mild Joint Instabilty.
Grade 3
- It involves complete tear of the ligament
- Patient feels severe pain, swelling,tenderness and ecchymosis.
- There is mechanical instability and loss of motion in the joint.
Symptoms of Ankle Sprain:
- Pain - It occurs especially when you bear weight on the affected foot
- Tenderness
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Restricted range of motion
- Instability in the ankle
Management of Ankle Sprain:
1. R.I.C.E.Method:
- Rest: Avoid putting weight on the injured ankle.
- Ice: Apply ice to the affected area for 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours to reduce swelling.
- Compression: Use a compression bandage to help control swelling.
- Elevation: Keep the ankle elevated above the level of the heart to minimize swelling.
2. Pain Management:
- Pain relievers, such as ibuprofen can help manage pain and reduce inflammation in the ankle.
3. Physical Therapy:
- A physical therapist can provide exercises to improve strength, flexibility, and stability.
Some Exercises for Ankle Sprain Rehabilitation-
- Ankle Circles:
- Rotate your ankle clockwise, then counterclockwise.
- Perform 10 circles in each direction.
Towel Scrunches:
- Sit on the floor with your legs extended.
- Place a towel on the floor in front of you.
- Scrunch the towel towards you using your toes.
Calf Raises:
-Stand with feet hip-width apart, holding onto a stable surface for support.
- Rise up onto your toes, lifting your heels off the ground.
- Lower back down with control.
