What is Alopecia Areata ?
Alopecia Areata literally traslates to 'patchy hair loss'. AA is one of the more common causes of hairfall and can occur most often on the scalp, beard or anywhere on the body. It can effect people of all skin colors and gender.
Why does it occur ?
AA is an autoimmune condition, i.e your own immune system starts to attack hair follicles which results in the hairloss. You are more susceptible if you have other autoimmune condtions like vitiligo, thyroid or a family history of AA. It most commonly effects adults in their 20s and 30s.
Do I have AA?
Most of the time, the onset of AA is acute i.e over a short period of time. A well demarcated single or several round/oval patches of normal appearing skin with no hair, is the hallmark symptom of AA. It can occur on the scalp, beard, eyebrow or any other hair bearing site. Some patients might experience localised tingling or itching preceding the hair loss. Around 15% patients might also have nail changes: red spots, dot like depressions, vertical ridges etc. Depending on the therapy, you may see your hair grow back between 4-12 weeks.
What are my treatment options?
A detailed history and hair/scalp examination by your dermatologist will help determine if the cause of your hairloss is Alopecia Areata. Your dermatologist will discuss the treatment options depending on the location and severity of AA. Treatment options include: topical creams, intralesional injections, phototherapy, PRP(platelet rich plasma) and oral medication.
Will my hair grow back?
AA can be unpredicatble. For some, the hair grows back and doesnot fall again while for some, hairloss might recur. A detailed discussion with your deramtologist will help you also understand other lifestyle changes that will help supplement your treamtment.
