Digestive discomfort is one of the leading reasons people seek out Ayurvedic care, and as an Ayurveda doctor, I have seen how closely our digestive health is tied to overall well-being.

In Ayurveda, the digestive system or “Agni,” our digestive fire is considered fundamental to health. A strong Agni is the cornerstone for nutrient absorption, immunity, and even mental clarity. When Agni falters, various gastrointestinal (GI) issues begin to manifest ranging from bloating, indigestion, acid reflux, constipation, to irregular bowel habits.

I always begin my assessment by considering a person’s constitution (Prakriti) and the balance or imbalance of the doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. For example, Vata imbalance often leads to gas, bloating, and irregularity; Pitta-type individuals may suffer more from acid reflux, heartburn, or inflammation; while Kapha tends towards sluggish digestion and heaviness.

Individualized diet and lifestyle are at the heart of Ayurvedic GI management.

For Vata aggravation, I recommend warm, moist foods, cooked with digestive spices like ginger and cumin, and mindful eating habits.

Pitta needs cooling foods, think cucumber, coriander, and fennel, to pacify heat and acidity.

Kapha benefits from light, stimulating fare, with plenty of bitter greens and spices like black pepper.

Herbs such as Triphala, Avipattikar, and Hingvastak are commonly used to tone the intestines, reduce inflammation, and support regularity.

I also encourage practices like small, regular meals, not eating on the go, and avoiding ice-cold beverages.

Alongside diet and herbs, simple self-care measures are powerful: gentle yoga, belly breathing (Pranayama), and daily routines that align with nature’s rhythms.

In Ayurveda, healing the gut is not about masking symptoms, it’s about honoring our body’s signals and making mindful changes that restore balance. When digestion is strong, vitality shines through every aspect of life.
