It was a special day and you ate your favourite dish. But you aren't happy about it because the food is not getting digested, you feel weak and tired without doing anything, you feel like vomiting out everything, you are having bitter and sour belching, no taste for anything or you may feel heaviness in your body. With all these symptoms you feel your heart and throat are burning. All these suggest you are suffering from hyperacidity. This is called as " Amlapitta " in Ayurveda.
There are many reasons because of which you may develop this disease of 'Amlapitta '.
- Eating non compatible food substances together. For eg: Having a hot cup of tea/coffee and a cup of ice cream together, having fish and milk together.
- Eating spoiled foods that have unpleasant odour, taste and texture.
- Frequently eating food which are sour in taste.
- Consuming food which produce burning sensation eg: green chillies, spicy packed chips etc.
- Consuming food and drinks which increase the pitta dosha in the body.
- Leading a stressful life.
This Amlapitta is of 2 types :-
1st variety- Adhoga- moving towards lower part of the body. Here the person often feels thirsty, there is burning sensation, giddiness, delusion and loss of consciousness. The vitiated pitta dosha moves out through the anal orifice. There is vomiting sensation, skin rashes, loss of appetite, sweating and yellowish appearance of the body.
2nd variety- Urdhwaga- moving towards upper part of the body. In this variety the person vomits and the vomitus is greenish or yellowish or bluish in colour, very slimy, it may be sour, salty, bitter or pungent. The person burps with the same taste as the vomitus. His throat, heart and stomach have a burning sensation, he has headache, he also has burning sensation in his hands and feet, he suffers from fever and loss of taste. There is itching and skin eruptions all over the body.
Amlapitta can be successfully treated in Ayurveda. Treatment varies from person to person depending on whether the disease is Adhoga or Urdhwaga, whether the disease has just begun or is chronic being present from many years, whether the symptoms are few or many, with severity or without severity etc. With all these in mind the doctor may plan a panchakarma treatment or prescribe oral medications or simply give you a diet plan to be followed very strictly.
What food can be consumed?
- Food prepared from barley and wheat can be consumed but they shouldn't be prepared using pungent, salty and sour food materials.
- Soup of green gram is also a good diet.
