There are many signs that are suggestive of a retinal disorder. Below are a few of them -
1. Blurred vision - This could be the first sign of many retinal disorders such as age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy & vein occlusions.
2. Loss of vision - Complete loss of vision can occur if the retinal detachment involves the central part of retina (macula) or there is a dense hemorrhage in the vitreous.
3. Floaters - Sometimes a tear or hole may develop in the retina that could lead to appearance of floaters. However, this could also be because of detachment of the posterior vitreous (PVD) which need not be treated.
4. Flashes- Sudden appearance of flashes of light is seen after the development of a break in the retina that would lead to retinal detachment or vitreous hemorrhage.
5. Peripheral field defects - Optic nerve disorders can lead to defect in the peripheral field of vision, sparing the central vision.
6. Distorted vision - Images may appear wavy if fluid collects in the central retina (macula). This is seen in conditions such a central serous retinopathy (CSR) and choroidal neovascular membrane (CNVM).
7. Loss of contrast - The brightness of images may be lost secondary to changes in the optic nerve following vein occlusions or retinal detachment.
If there is development of any of the above symptoms, it is necessary to visit your nearest ophthalmologist to avoid further damage.
