As a dermatologist, I’ve spent years studying skin and treating various conditions, but when it comes to my own skincare routine, I keep things simple and effective. After all, the same principles that apply to my patients apply to me too. Here are five skincare rules I never skip:
1. Cleansing Twice a Day
I can’t stress enough how important cleansing is. It’s the first step in any skincare routine, and I make sure to wash my face both in the morning and before bed. It’s not just about removing makeup or sunscreen—cleansing helps get rid of dirt, oil, and pollution that can clog pores and lead to breakouts.
2. Sunscreen Every Single Day
This one is a non-negotiable. I know how damaging UV rays can be to the skin, not only causing sunburn but also speeding up aging and increasing the risk of skin cancer. So, no matter what, I apply sunscreen with SPF 50 every morning. Even on cloudy days or when I’m staying inside, UV rays can still reach me. I don’t skip this, and neither should you.
3. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Moisturizing isn’t just for dry skin. Everyone’s skin needs hydration, even if you have oily or acne-prone skin like me. I use a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer that helps keep my skin smooth without clogging pores. It’s the best way to maintain a healthy glow.
4. Nighttime Skincare is a Must
Nighttime is when our skin really does most of its repair work. I always apply a retinoid or a peptide serum to encourage skin renewal. It’s also when I make sure to layer on a richer moisturizer to lock in hydration.
5. Exfoliate, but Don’t Overdo It
Exfoliating can be a game-changer for your skin, but I’ve learned that less is more. A couple of times a week, I use a gentle chemical exfoliant (nothing too harsh!) to slough off dead skin and reveal a smoother, brighter complexion. Over-exfoliating can lead to irritation, so I keep it mild and stick to a balanced approach.
Just remember: consistency is key!
