Introduction
Coughing is the body's natural way of clearing the throat and respiratory tract. However, a persistent or dry cough can become irritating and affect daily life. Ayurveda describes cough as "Kasa Roga", which can result from imbalances in Vata, Pitta, or Kapha doshas.
Rather than relying immediately on chemical-based syrups, Ayurveda offers natural, side-effect-free remedies that help soothe the throat, reduce inflammation, and build respiratory strength.
1. Tulsi-Ginger-Honey Decoction
Boil 5–6 fresh tulsi leaves with 1 inch of crushed ginger in water. Strain, and add a spoon of honey.
Benefits: Soothes the throat, reduces Kapha, and has antimicrobial action.
2. Turmeric Milk (Haldi Doodh)
Warm a glass of milk and add 1/4 tsp of turmeric and a pinch of black pepper. Drink at bedtime.
Benefits: Anti-inflammatory, improves immunity, helps with nighttime coughing.
3. Mulethi (Licorice) Powder
Mix 1/2 tsp of Mulethi powder with honey or warm water. Take twice a day.
Benefits: Relieves sore throat and soothes dry or irritated airways.
4. Steam Inhalation with Ajwain or Eucalyptus Oil
Add ajwain seeds or a few drops of eucalyptus oil to boiling water and inhale the steam.
Benefits: Clears nasal passages and loosens phlegm buildup.
5. Sitopaladi Churna + Honey
Take 1/2 tsp of Sitopaladi Churna with honey twice daily.
Benefits: Time-tested Ayurvedic formulation for all types of cough.
While these remedies are safe and natural, it's important to consult a registered Ayurvedic practitioner or General practitioner for proper diagnosis—especially if the cough is chronic, severe, or accompanied by fever or breathlessness.
