Diabetes is increasing rapidly in India, affecting people at a younger age than ever before. Many patients visit the doctor only after complications begin, simply because early symptoms were ignored or misunderstood. Knowing the warning signs can help in early diagnosis and long-term control.

Here are five common signs that may indicate diabetes:

1. Frequent urination and excessive thirst : Passing urine repeatedly, especially at night, along with constant thirst is one of the earliest symptoms. High blood sugar forces the kidneys to work harder, leading to dehydration.

2. Persistent tiredness and weakness, Feeling tired even after adequate rest is common in diabetes :

When glucose cannot enter cells properly due to insulin resistance, the body lacks energy, resulting in fatigue.

3. Increased hunger or unexplained weight loss :  Some patients feel hungry soon after meals, while others notice weight loss without trying. This happens when the body starts using muscle and fat for energy instead of glucose.

4. Blurred vision : Fluctuating blood sugar levels can affect the lens of the eye, causing temporary blurred vision. Repeated episodes should not be ignored.

5. Slow healing wounds and frequent infections : Cuts that heal slowly, recurrent skin infections, fungal infections, or urinary infections are common in uncontrolled diabetes due to reduced immunity.

When should you get tested ?

If you experience any of these symptoms—especially if you have a family history of diabetes—it is important to check your blood sugar levels. Early detection, lifestyle changes, and proper treatment can prevent complications affecting the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves.

Early diagnosis can change the course of the disease. Don’t delay testing.

Diabetes can often be detected early with simple tests. If you feel at risk or notice warning signs, timely medical advice can help you stay healthy and avoid complications.
