Toothache!! Source of fear and anxiety.  But, are you sure its toothache? One should visit a dentist to get checked any toothache problem or any sort of pain whether it is due to tooth or it is due to a certain medical condition.

Reffered pain is a common dental issue that is presented in the dental clinic. Referred pain is pain perceived in any part of the body which is far from the site or source of pain. Or we can say that it is the pain that is in any other area than true site of pain.

Any sort of pain related to TMJ, any musculoskeletal pain, any chronic back pain can also be referred to the jaws or other part of the body or face. Any kind of viral infection if present can cause sharp pain on side of face or jaws or teeth. Also the neurological pain such as trigeminal neuralgia is also perceived as toothache.

If we take one of the most common example is dental pain during a heart attack. Of the earliest signs that a person is having a heart attack is the referred pain to the left side of cheek and teeth, jaws, arms.  Also one can feel referred pain in case of affected paranasal sinuses that can also be perceived as toothache.

It is very important that diagnoses should be correct. If there is no pre existing dental issue, then consultation with a medical specialist should be necessary. So if your dentist advice a medical consultation make sure to get one.

Sometimes, dentist in order to get pain relief for the patient do dental extractions, which is the decision taken in order to benefit patient. But these should be avoided as patient lands no where, until a particular diagnoses is being arrived. One should not go for any dental procedures. These things can causes mental trauma to the patient.

So the key is careful listening patients problem, understanding the resent and past history as well, clinical as well as thorough radiological examination, dental screening. The best is to treat any existing condition if it is clearly visible, don’t go hastily.
