Zirconia crown treatment
I am going through a dental procedure where I am going to have zirconia crowns on my front teeths. I had two canines in  the upper front side. My doctor suggested me to go with an option of smile designing where the upper canines would be been removed post root canal treatment. Now zirconia crowns are going to be placed on my front teeths. I am curious to know if I can have a normal food life that I used to have before. Earlier I never had any dental problems. Now I am worried whether I can do normal biting and chewing like earlier after zirconia crowns treatment. Whether I will be able to have hot and cold food and drinks without having any sensation. Or is it ok to bite? I had laser treatment by the way for the RCT and zirconia crowns treatment. I just want to have a normal tension free life afterwards. Also, what is zirconia warranty and what to do after warranty time is over? Do we need to replace the tooth after warranty time even if they are healthy and in good condition?

If all the involved teeth are been rct treated then their will be no sensitivity as such and zirconia crowns are good but it is better to avoid hard biting from the front teeth for better longevity of the crowns
Next Steps
if the crowns  break in future then you need to get them changed

As a dentist, I’ll address your concerns about zirconia crowns, their impact on your daily life, and related questions in a clear and reassuring manner. **1. Can I have a normal food life after getting zirconia crowns?** Yes, you can generally return to a normal food life with zirconia crowns. Zirconia is a strong, durable material that mimics the function of natural teeth, allowing you to bite and chew most foods comfortably. However, since your upper canines were removed post-root canal treatment (RCT) and replaced with crowns, there are a few considerations: - **Biting and Chewing**: Zirconia crowns are highly durable and can withstand normal biting and chewing forces, similar to natural teeth. You should be able to eat most foods you enjoyed before, including crunchy or chewy items like apples, nuts, or meats. However, to protect your crowns and underlying teeth, avoid extremely hard foods (e.g., ice, hard candies) or habits like biting nails or opening packages with your teeth, as these could potentially damage the crowns or their bond to the underlying tooth structure. - **Adjustment Period**: After getting crowns, it may take a short adjustment period to feel fully comfortable with biting and chewing. Your bite will be checked by your dentist to ensure proper alignment, which is critical for comfortable function. If you feel any discomfort or uneven biting, inform your dentist for adjustments. **2. Can I have hot and cold foods/drinks without sensitivity?** Since your canines underwent RCT, the nerves inside those teeth have been removed, so the treated teeth themselves won’t experience sensitivity to hot or cold. Zirconia crowns also act as a protective barrier, further reducing the likelihood of sensitivity in those teeth. However: - **Adjacent Teeth**: If neighboring teeth without RCT are healthy, they may still be sensitive to temperature extremes, as normal teeth can be. If you experience sensitivity in those teeth, it’s unrelated to the crowns and should be evaluated by your dentist. - **Gum Health**: Sometimes, sensitivity can arise from gums or surrounding tissues, especially if there’s inflammation or recession. Proper oral hygiene (brushing twice daily, flossing, and regular dental visits) will help maintain healthy gums and minimize discomfort. - **Fit of Crowns**: If crowns are not properly sealed or fitted, there could be sensitivity in rare cases. Since you had laser-assisted RCT and crown placement, the precision of the procedure likely minimizes this risk, but let your dentist know if you experience any unusual sensations. **3. Is it okay to bite with zirconia crowns?** Yes, it’s generally safe to bite with zirconia crowns, as they are designed to handle normal biting forces. Zirconia is one of the strongest dental materials, resistant to chipping and cracking under typical use. However: - Avoid excessive force or habits that could stress the crowns, such as chewing on hard objects or grinding your teeth (bruxism). If you grind your teeth at night, your dentist may recommend a nightguard to protect your crowns and natural teeth. - Your smile design procedure involved removing canines and placing crowns, which may slightly alter your bite dynamics. Ensure your dentist checks your occlusion (bite alignment) to confirm the crowns integrate well with your natural teeth for comfortable biting. **4. Can I have a normal, tension-free life after this treatment?** Absolutely, the goal of zirconia crowns and smile design is to restore function and aesthetics, allowing you to live confidently and comfortably. With proper care, you can expect: - **Normal Function**: As mentioned, you can eat, speak, and smile normally, with minimal restrictions. - **Aesthetic Confidence**: Zirconia crowns are highly aesthetic, mimicking the translucency and color of natural teeth, which should boost your confidence in your smile. - **Long-Term Durability**: With good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, zirconia crowns can last many years, contributing to a tension-free life. To maintain this, follow these tips: - Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. - Floss daily or use interdental brushes to clean around the crowns. - Visit your dentist every 6 months for checkups and cleanings. - Avoid habits like teeth grinding or chewing on hard objects. **5. What is the warranty for zirconia crowns, and what happens after it expires?** The warranty for zirconia crowns varies depending on the dental practice, manufacturer, and region, but here’s a general overview: - **Warranty Period**: Many dental practices or labs offer warranties for zirconia crowns ranging from 5 to 15 years, covering defects in the material or craftsmanship (e.g., chipping, cracking, or debonding due to manufacturing issues). Your dentist should provide specific details about the warranty for your crowns, including duration and what it covers. If you haven’t received this information, ask your dentist for the warranty terms in writing. - **After Warranty Expires**: A warranty expiration doesn’t mean the crowns need replacement. If your crowns are still in good condition—free of cracks, chips, or issues with fit or function—there’s no need to replace them. Zirconia crowns can last 10–20 years or longer with proper care, even beyond the warranty period. Replacement is only necessary if: - The crown becomes damaged (e.g., cracked or chipped). - The underlying tooth develops issues (e.g., decay or structural failure, though less likely post-RCT). - There’s significant gum recession or changes in bite that affect the crown’s fit. Regular dental checkups will help monitor the condition of your crowns and underlying teeth. If issues arise, your dentist can assess whether repair or replacement is needed, regardless of warranty status. **6. Additional Notes on Your Laser-Assisted Treatment**: Your mention of laser treatment for RCT and crown placement suggests advanced techniques were used, which often improve precision and reduce recovery time. Laser-assisted RCT can minimize discomfort and promote faster healing, while laser use in crown preparation may enhance accuracy in fitting. These factors increase the likelihood of a successful outcome, supporting your goal of a normal, tension-free life. **Final Advice**: You should be able to enjoy a normal food life, bite and chew comfortably, and consume hot or cold foods without sensitivity in the treated teeth, provided the crowns are properly placed and your oral health is maintained. Zirconia crowns are a reliable, long-lasting solution, and with good care, they can serve you well beyond any warranty period. If you have concerns about sensitivity, bite comfort, or warranty details, discuss them with your dentist for personalized reassurance and adjustments if needed. If any issues arise post-treatment, such as discomfort or unusual sensations, contact your dentist promptly for evaluation. Feel free to ask if you have more questions or need clarification!
