Thyroid tests should ideally be done before taking thyroid medication, but if already on medication, inform your doctor, as they may still perform tests to monitor treatment effectiveness and adjust doses accordingly.

When you’re scheduled for a thyroid function test (like TSH, T3, or T4), it is generally advised not to take your thyroid medication before the blood test. This is because the medication can temporarily raise your thyroid hormone levels and may not provide an accurate reflection of your thyroid function. It’s usually recommended to take your thyroid medication after the blood draw. If your doctor has specific instructions that differ from this general advice, it’s best to follow their guidance. For the most accurate results, it’s also often recommended to do the blood test first thing in the morning, before you take any medication.

Yes you can take your medication as per you schedule. But you should give the history of taking thyroid medication to your doctor. See thyroid test tells about the level of TSH and T4 in your blood. TSH will not be affected by thyroid medication you have taken but T4(the actual thyroid hormone)might. So telling your doctor about the medicine intake would help them to read the report accordingly. Hope you got your answer. Take care.
