Suicidal thoughts
Over the past several months (or longer), I’ve noticed that my mood becomes extremely unstable around my menstrual cycle. During this time, I experience: Intense sadness Excessive crying Feelings of being unloved or unworthy Thoughts that people, especially my partner, don’t care about me Feeling emotionally ignored or invisible Difficulty sleeping when these episodes happen Heightened sensitivity to rejection or lack of response Strong emotional pain if I feel unsupported These feelings become so strong that they affect my relationships and my ability to function normally. For example, last night I cried the entire night and didn’t sleep, and even though my partner and I have been together for three years, he didn’t ask why I was upset. This intensified my thoughts that I’m not worthy of love. Small interactions feel painful and overwhelming during this time. Most of these symptoms appear cyclically, especially around my period, and I return to a more stable emotional state afterward.

Many women notice that emotions become much more intense around the menstrual cycle. Hormonal changes during this time can strongly affect mood, sleep, and how the brain interprets closeness, rejection, or support. When this sensitivity increases, small events can feel deeply painful, even though these feelings usually ease once the cycle passes. This pattern is distressing, but it is a recognised and understandable experience, not a flaw in you or your relationship.
Next Steps
To reduce the impact of these episodes, the following steps are often helpful: - Reaching out to a mental health professional, especially a therapist, to work on emotional regulation, self-worth, and relationship sensitivity during vulnerable phases - Considering a medical or gynecological review to explore whether cycle-related mood changes need targeted support - Tracking mood, sleep, and emotional triggers across the cycle to better anticipate and prepare for difficult days - Practising grounding or calming techniques when emotions rise, particularly at night to support sleep - Having gentle, planned conversations with your partner about what support feels helpful during this phase, rather than addressing it in the peak of distress - Prioritising rest and reducing emotional demands on yourself during this time
Health Tips
Because these symptoms repeat and significantly affect your functioning and relationships, seeking professional support is a sensible and supportive step. With the right guidance, many women learn to manage these cycles with much less emotional pain. Hello , What you are describing sounds very distressing, and it is understandable that these emotional experiences feel overwhelming, especially when they occur repeatedly around your menstrual cycle. Many individuals notice significant mood changes linked to hormonal fluctuations, and these changes can intensify feelings of sadness, sensitivity, and emotional pain even when relationships and circumstances themselves have not changed. However, when mood changes become intense enough to affect sleep, relationships, and thoughts about self-worth, it is important to seek professional help. These experiences are treatable, and you do not have to manage them alone. A detailed evaluation can help understand whether these symptoms are related to premenstrual mood changes, depression, emotional regulation difficulties, or other treatable conditions. Reaching out for help is a strong and important step toward feeling better
Next Steps
Please consider consulting a psychiatrist or mental health professional in person (or via a scheduled consultation) for a detailed assessment. If you notice thoughts about harming yourself becoming stronger or difficult to control, please seek immediate help from a trusted person, family member, or emergency services.
Health Tips
Until you are able to consult, it may help to track your mood across the menstrual cycle for a few weeks. This information can be very useful in planning treatment.
