Sudden weight gain and unable to lose we
Hello Doctor, I am a 32-year-old female, height 156 cm. My weight was 58 kg until March 2025, but it suddenly increased to 63 kg. Despite reducing sugar, exercising regularly, following diets, and trying home remedies, I have been unable to lose weight. I have had severe constipation since my pregnancy 8 years ago, along with bloating and abdominal distension. I had PCOS in the past. In April 2025, I consulted a Siddha doctor for PCOS and took medicines for one month. I spent around ₹10,000, but I noticed weight gain and stopped the treatment. Since January 2026, my periods have become regular and I currently do not have PCOS symptoms. I have also consulted a gastroenterologist, but nothing has changed. I am looking for safe Ayurvedic treatment and guidance to lose around 8 kg. Could there be any hormonal or metabolic issue any guidance please to lose weight

Namaste. A sudden weight gain despite dietary control and regular exercise, especially with a history of chronic constipation, bloating, and previous PCOS, suggests that the root cause may need further evaluation rather than focusing only on weight loss. In Ayurveda, long-standing constipation and abdominal distension are often associated with an imbalance of Apana Vata and impaired digestive function (Agni), which can affect metabolism and make weight reduction difficult. Since your periods are now regular, it is still important to assess other factors such as thyroid function, insulin resistance, stress levels, sleep quality, and current dietary habits. For now, prefer warm water, freshly cooked meals, adequate vegetables, seasonal fruits, regular walking, and avoid frequent snacking, processed foods, and late-night meals. Do not follow extreme diets, as they may further disturb digestion. As your symptoms are chronic and you have already tried multiple approaches without significant improvement, a detailed assessment is required before suggesting Ayurvedic medicines or a personalized weight-management plan. You may consider an online consultation for a comprehensive evaluation and individualized treatment guidance.

Your concern is understandable. A weight increase from 58 kg to 63 kg despite dietary control and regular exercise suggests that there may be factors beyond simple calorie intake contributing to the weight gain. The history of chronic constipation, bloating, abdominal distension, previous PCOS, and difficulty losing weight despite lifestyle efforts indicates that a deeper evaluation of your overall metabolic and digestive health may be necessary. From an Ayurvedic perspective, persistent constipation and impaired digestion can contribute to feelings of heaviness, bloating, sluggish metabolism, and difficulty managing weight. The fact that your menstrual cycles have become regular is encouraging and may indicate that your hormonal balance has improved compared to the past. However, regular periods alone do not always guarantee that all metabolic factors are functioning optimally. A gain of approximately 5 kg over a year is significant enough to warrant a structured assessment, especially when accompanied by digestive complaints that have persisted for many years.
Next Steps
Rather than focusing solely on rapid weight loss, the first goal should be improving digestive health and bowel regularity. Keep a record of your meal timings, bowel habits, sleep schedule, physical activity, and foods that worsen bloating. Many individuals find that irregular eating patterns, inadequate hydration, poor sleep, and chronic stress contribute significantly to weight management difficulties. Since you have already tried multiple diets and consulted specialists without satisfactory improvement, an individualized Ayurvedic assessment would be helpful to understand the root cause of your symptoms and develop a personalized treatment plan. For personalized assessment, better guidance, and a holistic Ayurvedic approach to weight management, digestive health, and metabolic wellness, you may connect with us at 9 3 1 5 6 6 1 5 6 5.
Health Tips
Aim for regular meal timings, adequate hydration, daily physical activity, and 7–8 hours of quality sleep. Avoid frequent snacking, late-night meals, and highly processed foods. Include fiber-rich vegetables, seasonal fruits, and home-cooked meals while chewing food thoroughly and eating mindfully. Gentle walking after meals can also support digestion and reduce bloating. Most importantly, do not become discouraged by slow progress. Sustainable weight loss is usually achieved by addressing the underlying factors affecting digestion, metabolism, and lifestyle rather than relying on restrictive diets or short-term remedies. With a structured and individualized approach, achieving your target weight and improving digestive comfort is often possible. Thank you

There could be some other underlying diseases that can cause such unexpected weight gain like Hypothyroidism, Insulin Resistance, Hypercortisolemia (High Cortisol). Ayurvedic Perspective (Metabolic Stagnation) is Manda Agni (Weak Digestive Fire)ie When the internal metabolic fire is weak, the body cannot properly assimilate food, turning even healthy, low-calorie meals into Ama (undigested toxins). And Ama Accumulation ie This toxic residue blocks the bodily channels (Srotas), causing severe water retention, bloating, heavy accumulation of fat tissue (Meda Dhatu), and a completely locked metabolism. The treatment requires proper history and some tests that can rule out underlying causes for that I will prefer you must get a online consultation so that I can help you out properly and find out causes not just randomly provide medicines.
Next Steps
Since you asked i would recommend that you have some tests like thyroid profile, HBA1C, cortisol test it should be done in morning and a recent ultrasound is required. After confirming the cause only we can prescribe line of treatment as it requires panchkarma and internal medicines and lifestyle changes.
Health Tips
You can have ashwagandha as it helps lower elevated cortisol levels and balances the nervous system gudhuchi acts as an immunomodulator to combat internal insulin resistance and shatavari helps nourish the reproductive tissues and preserve healthy ovulation. Avoid cold dairy, refined white sugar, and heavy wheat flour, which trigger immediate bloating and sluggish bowel transit. Incorporate light millets (like jowar or ragi) and bitter, astringent vegetables (such as fenugreek, drumstick, and bitter gourd) to optimize metabolic clearing. And you must continue exercises and yoga on a daily basis. Do not sleep right after your meals and maintain at least a 2-to-3-hour gap between your final meal and bedtime to prevent food fermentation, morning abdominal distension, and metabolic stalling.
