Burning feet syndrome (Grierson-Gopalan syndrome) causes uncomfortable, painful heat and tingling in the feet, which often worsens at night. It is usually a symptom of nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy) caused by diabetes, chronic alcohol use, vitamin B deficiencies, or kidney issues.
The sensation of burning feet points to underlying nerve dysfunction or circulation issues:
1. High blood sugar can damage nerves, causing burning, tingling, or numbness in the extremities.
2. Lack of B vitamins (especially B12 or thiamine), or minerals like magnesium, is a frequent culprit.
3. Alcoholic neuropathy can develop over time, damaging nerve fibers.
4. Nerve compression pinch nerves in the ankle.
5. Hypothyroidism, chronic kidney disease, certain chemotherapy drugs, athlete's foot, or exposure to toxins.
Treatment focuses on identifying and managing the root cause. Common medical strategies are:
1. Controlling blood sugar, cutting back on alcohol, or taking vitamin supplements if deficiencies exist.
2. Drugs like gabapentin or pregabalin.
3. Creams containing capsaicin or lidocaine patches can be used for localized relief.
4. Soaking feet in cool water for 15-20 minutes (avoid if there is erythromelalgia).
5. Wearing well-fitted, breathable footwear to avoid pressure on sensitive areas.
6. Elevating your feet when resting to improve circulation.
Sometimes burning feet is due to a more serious medical issue
