Root canal can be started after evaluating how much of the tooth structure is remaining and since it is long standing infection it might require 2-3 sittings, you must consult a dentist asap otherwise it may lead to pus formation and swelling.

Get the tooth evaluated by a dentist. If it’s decayed since a more than a year, it might need root canal treatment. It is possible not to have pain but it can pain anytime food gets stuck. Get it treated before the tooth fractures and no other option is left other than removing it.
