Is it that once you have dry eyes, it will stay throughout your life?

It is recommended to have a dry eye specialist evaluate you for the type of dry eye and the likely cause. There may not be a definitive cure for dry eyes however the symptoms can be well managed with medications or other therapies so that you can live a reasonably symptom free life.

Avoid excessive use of screens and air conditioning or indoor heating.
Wear contact lenses judiciously, if applicable.
Use an unpreserved topical lubricant regularly.
After examination, your dry eye specialist may recommend the use of adjunctive eye drops like topical Cyclosporine or other therapies like Intense Pulse Light Therapy with Photo Biomodulation.
Apply warm compresses at bedtime.

The commonest reason of dry eye is a drops in the number of mucous producing glands. If the number falls below a critical level your eyes will need substitution periodically for all times. You should also understand that ambient temperature and humidity are an important component of management. Managing environment is about 50% of treatment. You cannot depend on eye drops alone

Lubricants are generally given to reduce symptoms till the root cause is treated and managed. It could be habitual, environmental, digital strain , mgd , etc .
