I went to my dentist and while examining my teeth he poked my gum with something pointed and then applied some sort of solution by cotton after the applying of which I experienced sensation and coolness? With what did he poke my gums and why did he did so? What was the thing which the dentists apply after such a procedure because I lost the taste of my taste buds for few hours. Kindly tell.

To check your gums health a dentist has to use a probe and anesthesia gel.
The affect of anesthesia last for few hours.
And no much significant side effect.
So don't worry about the sensation. It will be only for temporary period.
Your dentist must have used a periodontal probe to check the pockets in your gums. Then he had applied a local anesthetic gel which numbs the area which resulted in the loss of taste sensation for few hours till the effect of anesthesia waned off.
