Food lodgement over the erupting third molar causes pericoronitis. Mainting oral hygiene will help get rid of it.
Next Steps
Consult a dentist and get an xray done to check if there is enough space for the tooth there and to check the position of the erupting third molar. If the position angulation is fine and there is enough space then no issues if not it has to be removed.
Health Tips
Brush properly. Warm salt water gargling to be done after having food.

Go for opg xray to determine the position of wisdom tooth. If it’s impacted then go ahead for extraction.

Generally wisdom teeth do not erupt properly leaving some gap between the tooth and gum. Food accumulation in that space causes infection of the operculum known as pericoronitis. Proper oral hygiene is the key to get rid of infection - Brush twice daily - use medicated mouthwash at night after brushing - Lukewarm salt water rinse thrice daily.  While you still have the lukewarm water in your mouth, use your finger to gently message the last tooth area. This will help clear food particles reducing the infection. Continuous infection in that area is serious which may lead to abscess or worse.
Next Steps
Video consult or Visit dentist if infection persists
Health Tips
Continue lukewarm salt water rinse even after the infection has subsided.

If there is food accumulation between the gum tissue and the unerupted tooth or there is repeated trauma from the occluding tooth of the upper arch there may be pericoronitis. In the initial stage when the tooth is erupting and if there is space for the tooth to erupt then you may not opt for the extraction for the tooth. But if there is repeated incidence of such swelling and the tooth is yet to erupt you may have to opt for extraction of the tooth.
Next Steps
Warm saline mouth rinse to keep the area clean. Visit your dentist or opt for video consultation at Practo in case you need any medications.
