Pericoronitis
Hi, I've attached a prescription and an x ray I had a pain in the wisdom tooth area, in the gums in particular. I visited a dentist today, who said it was pericoronitis. The gums were inflamed and there was a bit of swelling and also the infection. It was because of the wisdom tooth and i was asked to get it removed. I've attached the x ray it shows that the wisdom tooth is not in a straight position and its roots are kind of bent. So I was told that the open tooth extraction procedure has to be done, if not the tooth may break into pieces. And I was asked to eat before visiting as after the procedure i won't be allowed to have anything. I'm afraid. What exactly is open tooth extraction? Will it be painful? Will they put stitches on that. Is there no other alternative.. I asked for meds but I was told that they are only temporary and the pain will come back until I get that tooth removed. Please help.

Hi, nothing to worry about go for surgical removal, if you will follow all the post operative instructions thoroughly and take your medicines on time then you will recover well. Also, stitches are generally removed after 7-10 days. The procedure will be done under Local anesthesia you won't feel any pain on the chair.

No,there is no other alternative. You will have to go for extraction. Nothing to worry about,They will give you local anesthesia before the procedure so there will not be any pain. Open extraction or surgical extraction is a tooth removal procedure in which surgical access is required to completely remove a tooth. Yes,stiches will be placed.

Hi. Conventionally, wisdom teeth erupt or attempt to erupt in different directions when there is less space in the jaws to accommodate them. This happens with a considerable proportion of the population. They might or might not cause pain and end up with other complications like infections or inflammation as in your case. They can be left unattended if they cause no such symptoms. But in this case, painkillers can only give a temporary relief and you may end up perceiving the pain again randomly. So a permanent solution, will be this open-tooth extraction- when the tooth is not visible or accessible, the surrounding bone is reduced or the gums may be surgically removed in relation to the tooth to enable the removal of the offending tooth. This procedure involves local anesthesia and is perfectly ok to be performed in your case. So please don't worry. Stitches will be placed as required - can you be decided only after the surgeon begins to operate on the tooth. Please follow the post extraction instructions the dentist gives as they facilitate faster and safer healing of the extraction site.

Hi, From the x-ray shown, it is better to remove the wisdom tooth. Medication will resolve the problem for a temporary period. The pain and swelling will come back. The permanent solution is to remove the tooth. Open tooth extraction is a surgical removal of wisdom tooth. You will have mild pain and swelling for a few days after the removal. You will have to be on a soft diet for a few days. Stitches will be placed, which will be removed after 1 week.

Hello! As per your X-ray, the tooth is impacted and slightly bent because of which there is inflammation of the surrounding gums. Related to your query about open extraction it’s just that because of the impaction the tooth might require bone guttering which is nothing but trimming of the surrounding bone for easy extraction of the tooth and usually such procedures require sutures to ensure better healing.
