I would also like to know if it is only pain in the joints or is there a clicking sound while mouth opening as well. The condition comes under the category of MPDS or TMDs. Causes can be due to stress... Injury....High points in dental restoration or prostheses...or Idiopathic. Before treatment proper history and examination is important to know the underlying cause so that it can be managed accordingly.  Usually if it is Idiopathic or Stress related... it can be treated by giving rest to the joint by minimal mouth opening and being on soft diet for about 2 weeks & Analgesics can be taken for pain. Other causes have to be evaluated and treated accordingly. - Dr. Som Ranjan Pathak
Next Steps
Visit an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon or Oral medicine  Specialist for further evaluation.
Health Tips
For now...minimal mouth opening & soft diet. After visiting the specialist they will advice you as to what best can be done.
