Lower back pain that radiates to one or both legs is a common symptom of several conditions. One possible cause is a herniated or slipped disc, which occurs when the soft, gel-like center of a disc in the spine protrudes through a tear in the outer layer and presses on nearby nerves. Other possible causes include spinal stenosis, sciatica, and spondylolisthesis. It is recommended that you consult an orthopedic doctor initially for your lower back pain symptoms. An orthopedic doctor specializes in musculoskeletal conditions, including those affecting the spine, bones, muscles, and joints. They will examine you and may order imaging tests like X-rays, MRI or CT scans to help diagnose the underlying cause of your symptoms. Based on the diagnosis, they may recommend non-surgical treatments such as medication, physical therapy or injections. In some cases, surgery may be needed to alleviate symptoms. If the orthopedic doctor suspects that the pain is due to a neurological problem or there are other complications involved, they may refer you to a neurologist for further evaluation and treatment. It is important to consult a doctor as soon as possible as back pain can worsen if left untreated, leading to other complications.
