Most importantly its the age factor that is a reason for the noise that is produced while you sit, walk or sit cross leg. Try to avoid sitting cross leg, always use a stool or a little elevated surface to sit while performing prayer. Also start with the normal exercises(as tolerated) for the knee to strengthen the muscles around the knee joint so that the muscles become strong enough and lessen the khat khat noise produced. Gradually increase the exercise.
Next Steps
Consult a nearby orthopedic surgeon and get a xray done for the knee to see exactly how much degeneration has occured so as to guide you the appropriate management exercises and medications for the same
