Is it possible to get hiv?
Doctor, I had a blood draw on Saturday for Cbp and right after, cotton was placed on the site. After removing cotton There was a blood on cotton am not sure it’s mine or someone , but I washed it immediately and left it to air. This yesterday morning (Tuesday) I noticed mild throat pain near my palate. I’m worried — could that situation expose me to HIV, or is this likely just irritation or dryness?”

Very minimal chances. No need to worry as this is a very low risk exposure. Symptoms are not related to HIV. Dont be alarmed.

Your throat pain is more likely due to allergy or dryness or infection or more than one of these factors, but unlikelydue to HIV. Share results of complete blood picture. Take combiflam one every 8hours for 3 to 4 days. Do hot saline gargles,  drink warm fluids.

Hi! Please don’t worry — HIV cannot be transmitted in this way. Once blood is exposed to air (as on a cotton ball), the virus becomes inactive within seconds. There’s no risk of HIV infection from a cotton swab or dried blood contact with your skin. Your mild throat irritation is unrelated — it’s most likely due to dryness, mild viral infection, or anxiety after the event. You don’t need any HIV test for this exposure. However, if you have ongoing anxiety, I can guide you on when and how to do a screening test just for peace of mind. You’re safe — no need to worry about HIV from that incident. — Dr. Yash Duragkar, MD (Medicine) .
