Hello. While both conditions cause inflammation of the liver, Hepatitis B and Amoebic Hepatitis are entirely different in terms of their causative organisms, transmission routes, and clinical presentation. Hepatitis B is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), primarily transmitted through exposure to infected blood, sexual contact, or from mother to child during birth. It can lead to acute or chronic long-term liver damage. On the other hand, Amoebic Hepatitis (more accurately termed an Amoebic Liver Abscess) is a parasitic complication caused by the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica. It occurs when the parasite is ingested through contaminated food or water, breaches the intestinal wall, and migrates to the liver via the portal bloodstream, creating a localized collection of pus rather than a generalized viral organ infection.
Next Steps
How Amoebic Hepatitis is Diagnosed:
Imaging Studies (Gold Standard): An Ultrasound of the Abdomen (USG Abdomen) or a Contrast-Enhanced CT (CECT) scan is the primary diagnostic method, which clearly visualizes the exact size, location, and presence of the parasitic abscess cavity in the liver.
Serological Blood Testing: An Amoebic Serology test (ELISA) is highly specific and checks for antibodies against Entamoeba histolytica in your bloodstream. A Complete Blood Count (CBC) will also typically show elevated white blood cells (leukocytosis).
Stool Microscopy: A routine stool examination can be checked to look for active amoebic cysts or trophozoites, although it may return negative if the intestinal phase of the infection has already cleared.
Health Tips
Word of Caution: Unlike viral Hepatitis B, which has standard vaccines and long-term antiviral protocols, Amoebic Hepatitis requires a completely distinct treatment plan using targeted antiprotozoal medications (like Metronidazole or Tinidazole) to eradicate the parasite, followed by luminal agents. Self-medicating or misinterpreting the root cause can cause the liver abscess to expand or rupture, leading to severe abdominal emergencies. Hepatitis B : - viral infection and chronic. Treatment is also based on antibody titers and need life long management. It also poses risk of hepatic cellular carcinoma (HCC- cancer)
Amoebic hepatitis :- parasite ( kindly of worm) infection. Acute condition. Can be treated and cured if diagnosed early.

Hepatitis B is a viral infection (HBV) spread through blood or sexual contact and can become chronic. Amoebic hepatitis is caused by a parasite (Entamoeba histolytica) from contaminated food/water and usually causes a liver abscess. Amoebic hepatitis is diagnosed by ultrasound showing liver abscess plus blood test for amoeba antibodies (ELISA). Stool exam may also help.

Both are different, HBV is viral and amoebic hepatitis is protozoan infection caused by entamoeba histolytica. Diagnosed mainly by serology and depends on pts to pts.
Hepatitis B is a viral infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) that primarily affects the liver. It is diagnosed by HBsAg, anti-HBc, HBeAg, HBV DNA, along with liver function tests.
Amoebic hepatitis is not a commonly used diagnosis. Entamoeba histolytica typically causes an amoebic liver abscess, where the liver is secondarily involved due to amoebic infection from the intestine. Patients usually present with fever, right upper abdominal pain, and tender enlarged liver, rather than isolated hepatitis.
Diagnosis of amoebic liver abscess includes:
• CBC, liver function tests
• Ultrasound or CT abdomen showing liver abscess
• Entamoeba serology (highly sensitive in endemic areas)
• Stool examination may be normal and does not exclude the diagnosis.
