Surgery is only advisable if you have symptoms of compression not relieved by physio or getting worsen You didn't tell about your weight. Because overweight and obesity also negative effects on disc. If you are overweight or obese then also go for weight reduction. There are some preventive measures to decrease the disc strain.... 1)Try to avoid sudden forward bending, weight lifting. 2)Always get up in lateral position from lying down to sitting.

Emergency surgery if bowel bladder problems, numbness in general area or paralysis of legs. As you mentioned you are fine in moderate exertion, you may wait it out, but in the mean time increase your bone density in preparation for surgery at least so that when you need surgery the screws would need a good anchor that is a strong bone, because ultimately you may need it.
Health Tips
protein rich diet and calcium, vit D., moderate exercise, don't just bed rest
