Itching without any visible rash for five days, followed by cold and fever, most often points to either a viral illness (many viral fevers cause itching before any rash appears) or an allergic reaction, sometimes to something new such as a soap, detergent, food or medicine. Dry skin in cold weather is another very common cause. Persistent itching with no rash occasionally reflects an internal cause such as anaemia, thyroid disease, liver or kidney problems, so it is worth a basic check if it continues.ithout any visible rash together with a recent cold and fever is most often an allergic or viral reaction, and dry skin or heat can make it worse. Sometimes a viral illness itself triggers hives that come and go without leaving marks. It is usually self-limiting, but persistent itching needs a check for causes such as anaemia, thyroid, liver or blood sugar problems.
Next Steps
For now, use lukewarm (not hot) water, a mild soap, and a generous moisturiser twice daily; wear cotton clothes and stop any newly introduced soap, detergent or cosmetic. Paracetamol as needed for fever, plenty of fluids and rest usually settle a viral illness in 3-5 days, and a non-sedating antihistamine such as cetirizine at night can be taken for the itch after checking with a doctor. If the fever lasts beyond 3-4 days, get a CBC, ESR/CRP, LFT, RFT, TSH and, in an endemic area, dengue/malaria tests. Feel free to consult me on Practo or at Synergy Miraj if it is not settling.
Health Tips
Seek care urgently if you develop swelling of the lips, face or tongue, breathlessness or wheeze, blisters or peeling skin, a spreading rash with high fever, or yellow eyes.
