Cholesterol always high
Hey my cholesterol is always high if I'm on a diet then it's always borderline but if I go off diet even for a week it shoots up a lot. Why does this happen. Now it's 280. I had gone to my family doctor who recommended statins but I am scared that if I leave after completing the course I will have the same problem again. My father also has high cholesterol since 2 decades now Please help

Hello, what you can do is manage your food choices, at home and when you are eating out. Here are some things you can do daily to help bring down the lipid levels. 1. Focus on consuming more fiber-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains such as whole wheat, brown rice, millets, oats, and quinoa. 2. Include healthy fats in your diet such as avocado, nuts like almonds and walnuts, seeds like sesame seeds, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, and olive oil. 3. Limit the consumption of saturated fats like ghee, butter, or coconut oil. Use MUFA based oils such as mustard oil, groundnut oil, rice-bran oil, etc. 4. Avoid consumption of trans fats like margarine or dalda coming from fried foods or processed and packaged foods. 5. When having dairy products choose low fat milk and its products. 6. Limit the intake of alcohol and quit smoking. 7. Lose weight if you need too as that helps in bringing down the cholesterol levels. 8. Lastly, remember to exercise regularly. Remember to be patient as it takes time to bring down cholesterol just as it takes time for it to increase in the human body. Connect with me, Ms. Arati Shah – cofounder and principal nutritionist at Café Nutrition to help you manage your lipid levels through food and lifestyle changes.
