If you have been diagnosed with anxiety for the 1st time, a period of 1 year of regular medication may suffice full recovery. Tapering off medication should be gradual and slow over a period of say 3- 6 months after achieving full remission. Sudden withdrawal of serotonin medication may cause withdrawal symptoms like headaches, nausea, fatigue, depressed mood etc. Sometimes some individuals may need longer periods of treatment based on various parameters like past history of psychiatric illness, family history, onset, response to treatment etc.
Next Steps
Consult a psychiatrist before deciding to stop the medication abruptly.
