In cattle, the time from when the rabies virus first appears in the saliva to the animal's death is less than 25 days. After the first clinical signs appear, a cow typically dies within 7 to 10 days.
Next Steps
If a cow licked an open wound and you are unsure of its health status, Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water for at least 15 minutes. Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is highly effective if started before symptoms develop.
Health Tips
Contact a veterinarian to examine the cow.

Hello,
I am Dr. Romain Rajan, General Physician (Ex Govt Medical Officer at RML Hospital, New Delhi), and your case has been allotted to me.
I understand your concern. Let me explain this clearly.
About rabies in cows
Cows can get rabies, but it is rare compared to dogs. When an animal becomes capable of transmitting rabies (virus present in saliva), it is already in the late stage of disease.
Survival after becoming infectious
From the point a cow can transmit rabies through saliva:
⢠It usually shows clear symptoms (aggression, excessive salivation, abnormal behavior)
⢠It typically does not survive more than a few days
⢠In most cases, death occurs within 3 to 7 days of becoming infectious
ð It is very unlikely for a rabid animal to remain normal and healthy for long after becoming infectious.
About your situation (very important)
You mentioned:
⢠Cow licked your open wound
⢠You are sure the cow is normal
ð If the cow:
⢠Is healthy, active, eating normally
⢠Shows no abnormal behavior
⢠Remains normal over the next few days
Then the risk of rabies is extremely low.
Practical advice
Even though risk is low:
⢠Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water for 10â15 minutes
⢠Apply antiseptic
ð If there is any doubt, safest approach is:
⢠Consult a doctor and consider anti rabies vaccination (PEP)
When to take vaccination without delay
⢠If animal behavior is unknown or suspicious
⢠If animal cannot be observed
⢠If wound is deep or high risk
Important reassurance
Transmission from a normal healthy cow licking a wound is extremely uncommon. Rabid animals are usually visibly sick, not normal.

Rabies virus can survive for several years in the body of humans and other animals, depending on load of virus and can be activated any time.Better take vaccine and get the cow also vaccinated if possible.
The rabies virus can survive in rodents and cattle, thats why its usually recommend for cat, squirrel and rat bites too. So it is better to be safe. So please take the vaccine as there is no treatment for rabies once contracted.
Rabies-infected cows can shed virus in saliva only for a few days (usually 3–7 days) before showing severe symptoms, and they usually die within ~7–10 days after symptoms start.
Transmission from cows is very rare, but since your wound was open, take anti-rabies vaccine as precaution. Consult a doctor for proper guidance.
In Rabies, once an animal (including a cow) starts shedding virus in saliva, it usually develops symptoms soon and dies within a few days (generally 3–7 days). Survival beyond 10 days after becoming infectious is very unlikely.
Cow lick on an open wound = potential exposure.Risk is very low but not zero
Next Steps
Do not rely on observation alone.
Start Rabies (vaccine ± immunoglobulin) as per doctor advice
Health Tips
Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water for 15 minutes
Apply antiseptic
Better to be safe, as rabies is 100% preventable but fatal if untreated
For a cow to be infectious -
It would usually show clear abnormal behavior ,aggression or extreme restlessness, excessive salivation (frothing),unusual vocal sound.
A normal-looking cow is unlikely to be transmission stage.
Next Steps
DONT TAKE CHANCES , SINCE THE OPEN WOUND IS EXPOSED TO THE SALIVA…(ASAP)
WASH THE WOUND
APPLY ANTISEPTICS(povidine wash)
CONSULT MEDICAL CARE SOON AND GET POST EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS FOR (CATEGORY 3 EXPOSURE)
Health Tips
Eventhough cow to human rabies is rare , don’t take risks .
100% preventable if treated early
