Blood pressure can differ slightly between the right and left arms. At the initial assessment, measure it in both arms using a properly sized cuff and correct technique. For subsequent routine measurements, use the arm that consistently gives the higher reading.
Next Steps
For an accurate measurement, sit quietly for five minutes, keep your back supported, feet flat on the floor and arm supported at heart level. Avoid caffeine, smoking and exercise for 30 minutes beforehand, and take two readings about one minute apart.
Health Tips
A persistent difference of more than 10â15 mmHg between the arms should be discussed with your doctor, particularly if it is new. If blood pressure is 180/120 mmHg or higher and there is chest pain, breathlessness, severe headache, confusion, visual disturbance or weakness, seek emergency care.
