Hi Doctors,
I have accidentally Swallowed a chicken bone last night.
No Throat pain, no difficulty in breathing,I am able to eat everything solid and liquid.
I have sound sleep last night for eight hours.
But I have little abdominal pain ( I also have IBS )
Is it something serious??
How can I be confirmed that bone is safely passed or not??
Which doctor should I consult for that??

In most of the case it passes through stools. Only if symptomatic then get x ray done. For further evaluation and management kindly consult me on practo
Hello,
I am Dr. Romain Rajan, General Physician (Ex Govt Medical Officer at RML Hospital, New Delhi), and your case has been allotted to me.
Thank you for explaining your situation clearly. I understand the anxiety associated with swallowing a bone, but based on what you have described, let me reassure you.
Important reassurance
Since you have no throat pain, no breathing difficulty, are able to eat solids and liquids normally, and slept well, it is very unlikely that the chicken bone is stuck in the throat or food pipe.
If a bone gets stuck there, symptoms usually appear immediately, not the next day.
About your current abdominal discomfort
Mild abdominal pain after this incident is most likely due to anxiety or IBS flare, especially since you already have IBS. Stress and fear can easily trigger gut discomfort.
In most cases:
⢠Small chicken bones pass naturally through the intestine
⢠They get expelled silently with stool
⢠People usually do not notice anything
How to know if it has passed safely
There is no need to actively look for it unless symptoms appear.
You can be reassured if:
⢠You are eating normally
⢠There is no worsening abdominal pain
⢠No vomiting, blood in stool, or fever
What you should do now
⢠Eat soft, high fiber food (banana, rice, curd, vegetables)
⢠Drink plenty of water
⢠Avoid excessive checking or straining
⢠Do not induce vomiting
⢠Try to stay calm as anxiety worsens gut symptoms
When to consult a doctor immediately
⢠Severe or increasing abdominal pain
⢠Vomiting or inability to eat
⢠Blood in stool or black stools
⢠Fever
⢠Sharp localized pain in one area of the abdomen
Which doctor to consult if needed
If any warning signs develop, consult:
⢠A General Physician first
⢠Or a Gastroenterologist if abdominal symptoms persist
At present, there is no indication for X-ray or scan, as chicken bones are often not visible and you have no red flag symptoms.
Please remember, in the majority of such cases, nothing serious happens.
For personalised one to one consultation and reassurance, you can reach out to me directly on WhatsApp at 85271646 seven seven.
Wishing you peace of mind and good health.
Normally small chicken bones pass harmlessly through the gastrointestinal tract. If you have immediate throat pain or chest discomfort or severe abdominal pain , you may have to get a abdominal xray and ultrasound scan abdomen
Get an USG Abdomen done
Consult a general surgeon on this
Per se there’s nothing to be worried about if you are able to go about your routine life, the bone will pass in stools
As of now condition is reassuring, no need to worry about that, for confirmation and further assistance consult gastroenterologist. They can guide you further. As of now just observation is sufficient in my opinion.

Most likely the bone has passed into the intestines safely.
