Wisdom Teeth Extraction with TMJ
Hi. I have TMJ disorder with jaw popping. I have been advised extraction of wisdom teeth. Attached my OPG xray. I am worried about the prolonged mouth opening for the extraction and what effect it will have on my TMJ. Kindly advise, is it better to go for 2 wisdom tooth extraction (same side) on one day and 2 on other side on another day? Or is it better to have 1 tooth extracted on 1 day to avoid prolonged mouth opening and pressure on TMJ? In that case, what should the timeline be? 1 tooth on 1 day and next week another tooth, and so on and so forth? Also, will this extraction help in relieving pressure from TMJ joint?

Dear Patient. You mean a combination of treatment for TMJ problem. So visit a dentist in your city or an Orthodontist in your city for consultation. Sometimes teeth alignment also decreases TMJ problems.  Just x-rays won't be enough to provide suitable treatment plan. Avoid self diagnosis and treatment.  Hope this helped.

Hie You can go for extraction of one side at a time I.e upper and lower or you can go for single single extraction depends on your convenience n if you are comfortable. For the other side wait for some time so that the extraction site gets heal.

Hi, Depending upon the OPG and keeping in mind your TMJ condition, It is highly advisable to go for one extraction at a time. Ping for multiple extraction can cause increased tension on your TMJ leading to further problems. Extraction of impacted teeth generally dont relate with TMJ problems other than if u are having problems of jaw displacement( which can only be diagnosed clinically)
Next Steps
Take a gap of minimum 15-20 days before going for another extraction as it will allow for proper healing to occur in the treated area as well as less discomfort for you overall.

It would be better for u to go for one side both upper and lower wisdom tooth extraction same day because lower extraction takes 30-45 mins and upper would take only 10-15 min maximum. And Doctor will give u breaks in between and also while doing the procedure So that u wont be having TMJ pain. Impacted tooth removal will improve your bite and take off strain from tmj.
