Fibre or roughage is the part from plant derived foods which cannot be completely digested by digestive juices or enzymes in the body. Soluble fibre is the fibre which can dissolve with water and digestive juices forms a gel like substance in the intestines and releases gases and some amount of calories. Eg oats, black beans, peas etc Insoluble fibre cannot dissolve with water or digestive juices and remains undissolved through the gastric intestinal tract and helps form softer stools, relieves constipation and prevents diverticular diseases. Both givers help in giving a feeling of fullness or satiety after eating and hence could aid in weight loss. The main sources lf fibre are whole cereals, millets in addition to legumes, lentils( dhals)., fruits, vegetables, green leafy vegetables and nuts and oilseeds. The recommended dietary requirement of fibre is around 25-40g / day Could derive it from 1 cup of cereal 1/2 lentils 2-3 servings of fruit 50 g of beans/ peas/ chickpeas Some nuts can be eaten whole or sprinkled on foods like breakfast cereal, oats etc

Hi, Almost all fruits and vegetables have good fiber content. Soluble fiber dissolves in water, and includes plant pectin and gums which aids in digestion. Insoluble fiber doesn’t dissolve in water. It includes plant cellulose and hemicellulose. Total dietary fiber intake should be 25 to 30 grams a day from food & not from supplements.
