Thank you for asking the question. This is a common doubt asked by many with this problem. You have to understand that diabetes is a condition which cannot be cured but can be controlled. Weight loss is ONE of the ways to control diabetes. How do you know if your blood sugar levels are in control? Make sure you test your blood sugar levels regularly (once in three months) There are three tests which you can perform to confirm the presence of this condition: a. Fasting blood sugar (FBS) - Normal is 70-120 mg/dl of glucose in blood. Anything more than that is considered as diabetes Post prandial blood sugar (PPBS) - Normal levels are from 120-160 mg/dl glucose in blood More than 200 mg/dl in two or more occasions is considered as diabetes 3. Random blood sugar (RBS) - An RBS of > 200 mg/dl on more than an occasion is considered as diabetes (if you haven't got these checked, it is best you get them done as soon as possible). Reduction in your weight cannot cure diabetes, it can only control it. There are other ways of controlling diabetes. a. Diet restrictions: You have to eat less sweets and reduce your intake of rice (if that is your staple diet), eating chapathis will help. b. Going for a walk in the morning will really help you. If you have time, then, a brisk walk for 30-45 minutes every day will help i not only reducing your weight but also controlling your sugar levels. c. Taking your medicines regularly, if you are medications, then you have to make sure that you consume them as advised by your doctor. Ill tell you about how the pancreas works. Pancreas is an organ in the body responsible for regulating blood sugar levels. It produces a substance called insulin which helps in maintaining the sugar levels in the blood. In an overweight person, the pancreas has to produce more insulin to maintain normal sugar levels. As the requirement for insulin increases, the pancreas starts working more and more. This organ has its limits, and once it crosses the limit, the cells in the pancreas stop producing insulin and you end up with high blood sugars and eventually with diabetes. So the main cause for diabetes is overweight. Hence by reducing your weight you will definitely be able to control diabetes. Cure is not possible because once the cells of the pancreas are damaged they cannot revert back to normal and hence the insulin production will be faulty no matter what. That is why if you are diagnosed of diabetes, the one thing that you can do to keep yourself healthy is weight reduction. I hope you got what you were looking for.
