I had started diagnosing my tmj disorder problem by a neuromuscular dentist....The cause of tmd was excessive teeth clenching because of misaligned teeth... My treatment was 1)splint therapy, 2)orthodontic correction... Now I can chew better, talk better but I am not totally normal now, as my bite and facial symmetry is not like before probably because of tight jaw or cheek muscles... And also I have neck and back problem with tight muscles...How much damage can occur due to excessive teeth clenching? And how can I understand the present condition of my tmj problem by observing myself? Please say some exercise for my condition.... Please help and clear my doubts...

And regarding muscle tension, they are designed to reduce it and not otherway round!
Consult orthopedic as well for your neck issues.

The cause for the disorder ( clenching and misaligned tooth) are now sorted.
Gradually you will get used to it. Initially you definitely will face discomfort. Avoid clenching of teeth.
