Hi since the gap has been there for a while and since it's understood that there was regular food sticking in between , there could been long term gum infection causing discomfort and also a possible deep cavity in one or both premolars . And now the food must be sticking inside that cavity and aggregating the pain. Please try not to stick a tooth pick again and see a dentist at the earliest.

hello,
visit a dentist and get it checked.if there is a cavity you need to get it filled. get a good scaling (cleaning) and polishing done. brush twice a day, rinse after every meal and floss regularly.
According to the symptoms that you have reported, the pain can be from two prime reasons. One can be a severe infection or abscess inside your gums because of food and tartar accumulation. Another reason could be a cavity in between two teeth at the contact point, which is not clearly visible from the outside. For accurate diagnosis you'll need a clinical check up and a small X-ray of that particular region, which the dentist may take at his clinic. Treatment will be provided according to the actual cause to provide you permanent relief.
