Clicking sound in d tmj is indicative of tmj disorders.  But there are various  reasons to rule out what exactly is causing it . Seeing his age it can be due to arthritis or may be malocclusion . For ruling out u need to come up with proper history  and clinical evaluation of d joint . Or u can videoconsult after taking an opg for d same . Restrict wide mouth opening Do alternate hot and cold fomentation Soft diet . Further u can consult online

I think pain is in your father's TMJ? It might be related to your father's dentition (Teeth wear and tear)
Next Steps
you can get full mouth xray (OPG) for him to conclude the diagnosis. Meanwhile he can take analgesics advised by your doctor.
Health Tips
He should have semi-solid/ soft diet
