Hi mam..   There is no side effects associated with cleaning( scaling and polishing).. It is one of the basic procedure and it is mandatory to do cleaning(scaling and polishing) for every 6 months.... Gum bleeding and swelling is medically termed as Gingivitis.. It is due to soft and hard deposits in your teeth( plaque and calculus).. Eventhough you brush regularly there is always some  inaccessible areas that needs to be cleaned( scaling and polishing)  by dentists
Next Steps

Health Tips
Do brush and floss twice daily Do gargle with mouth wash twice daily after food

Scaling and polishing ( cleaning of teeth) is advised for everyone at least once a year. Since you are already having bleeding of gums you must go for scaling. You may have a little sensitivity post treatment but that will resolve on its own

Hello there! The most common cause of swelling and bleeding of gums are deposits and stains on the tooth, so as you are yourself aware of it, professional cleaning or SCALING as we call it is required. There is no side effect of scaling as such, mild transient sensitivity might be felt for a day or two, nothing more than that. This can be prevented by using any desensitizing toothpaste.
Next Steps
Visit a dentist for the required treatment.
