Based on your description, a soft, tender swelling in the armpit following a fever and cold is highly consistent with a reactive lymph node, which is a normal immune system response to a recent viral infection. At this stage, general supportive home care is recommended: apply a clean, warm compress to the underarm for 10–15 minutes a few times a day to ease discomfort, allow your body to rest, and stay well-hydrated. I advise against starting empirical antibiotics unless a secondary bacterial infection is confirmed, as they are ineffective against viruses. Please schedule an in-person physical evaluation with your primary care provider so they can properly feel the area, and seek prompt medical attention if the lump becomes hard, significantly worsens in redness or pain, or fails to decrease in size over the next two to four weeks.

Next Steps
Health Tips

Considering that the swelling appeared after a recent viral/cold infection and is soft, tender and painful with arm movement, it is most likely a reactive axillary lymph node responding to the recent infection. Lymph nodes commonly become enlarged and tender during or shortly after infections, and sometimes only one armpit is affected. This is generally reassuring and does not automatically indicate anything serious.
Next Steps
Most infection-related lymph node swellings gradually reduce as the underlying infection settles, often within 1–2 weeks, although some reactive nodes can take several weeks to completely return to their usual size. Avoid repeatedly pressing or massaging the swelling, as this can keep it irritated. If it is increasing in size, becomes red/hot, develops significant pain, or does not start reducing within 1–2 weeks, an in-person examination is advisable to determine whether it is a lymph node or another type of swelling. For better treatment and personalised guidance, you may connect with us at 9 3 1 5 6 6 1 5 6 5 for proper treatment and guidance.
Health Tips
Take adequate rest, maintain good hydration and avoid strenuous activity involving the affected arm until the tenderness improves. You can use a warm compress over the area for comfort. Do not squeeze, puncture or repeatedly check the lump. Seek prompt medical attention if you develop persistent high fever, rapidly increasing swelling, marked redness/warmth, pus, unexplained weight loss or night sweats, or if the lump becomes hard and fixed rather than soft and tender. Thank you

“A tender, soft armpit swelling after a recent viral infection is commonly due to a reactive lymph node. It often settles gradually as the infection resolves. Avoid pressing or massaging it. However, if it continues to enlarge, becomes very painful/red, feels hard or fixed, or persists beyond 2–4 weeks, please get it examined. Please consult me if you need help assessing it and guiding supportive treatment.”
