A spasm in the epigastric area refers to a sudden and involuntary contraction of the muscles in the upper middle part of the abdomen, known as the epigastric region. This area is located between the chest and the belly button. There are several potential causes of spasms in the epigastric area, including: 1. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): The backward flow of stomach acid into the esophagus can cause pain and spasms in the epigastric area. 2. Gastritis: Inflammation of the stomach lining can lead to spasms and discomfort in the epigastric region. 3. Peptic ulcers: Open sores in the lining of the stomach or small intestine can cause spasms, along with other symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, and heartburn. 4. Gallstones: If gallstones get stuck in the bile duct, they can cause spasms and pain in the epigastric area. 5. Pancreatitis: Inflammation of the pancreas can lead to severe epigastric pain and spasms. 6. Muscle strain or injury: Physical strain or injury to the muscles in the upper abdomen can cause spasms and discomfort. To accurately identify the root cause, I recommend undergoing a comprehensive abdominal ultrasound scan. For effective spasm management, you can take Cyclopam tablets every 8 hours. Regards, Dr U N Sahoo (MD)
