Context- In the area where I reside, its a very common belief that 'mata' (holy spirit) can reside in body of a person.
My mom has had this issue for last 15-20 years. Sometimes randomly she would get triggered, start talking as another person, refering herself in third person. In the duration of these episodes, she claims being a powerful holy deity. More often than not, she has intense bodyache before/after these episodes. Recently, her episodes have become so frequent- almost daily. She cries a lot. She feels that she is somewhat trapped here.
I know this is a psychological issue. But what branch? Could someone give me any context on how to proceed? Does she need a therapist or a psychologist or another type of doctor? Could this treatment require taking medication?

There is something called cultural belief, but at times it goes beyond a limit to cause severe emotional distress and Behavioral changes to warrant treatment from a psychiatrist. Consult an astute psychiatrist either in person or online and seek remedy. Good luck
