Upper back aur middle back pain usually postural muscle strain, thoracic tightness, ya facet joint irritation ki wajah se hota hai.
IFT aur TENS dono pain relief ke liye use hote hain, lekin:
• TENS sirf superficial pain ko control karta hai.
• IFT deeper muscles mein work karta hai, inflammation & muscle spasm ko reduce karta hai.
Agar TENS se 7 days mein relief nahi mila, toh IFT ka response better hota hai — especially chronic thoracic pain mein.
Traction har patient ke liye required nahi hota, aur thoracic area mein iska use limited indication mein hota hai.
Back pain ka root cause mostly weak postural muscles + tight chest & upper back muscles hota hai, jo sirf machine therapy se completely theek nahi hota.
IFT or tens are pain relief devices but they do not act on the reason for pain you need to focus on treating the reason of the pain not the pain as its just a symptom, for detail assessment and treatment connect online.
Hello ,
I'll suggest you posture correction and
Muscle relaxation exercise for better and long-term effect
Tens or IFT ..BOTH are temporary
And traction is big no for a 26 yr person and muscle spasm case
You can get relax in tens than IFT ..but all is temporary relief
Next Steps
plz consult online for proper guidance and treatment
Dear, it’s not about which modality is better—it’s about selecting the right one based on the type of pain, its origin, and the treatment area.
IFT works by centralizing pain, helping to draw peripheral pain towards a central point, which promotes better modulation and supports tissue healing. It is particularly effective in radiculopathies, nerve-related pain, and acute or chronic injuries.
TENS, on the other hand, targets peripheral, scattered, and muscular pains. It works through the modulation of subconscious pain receptors, similar to the effect of a painkiller. It can also aid in mild muscle relaxation. However, it’s important to remember that using TENS at higher intensities may sometimes aggravate the pain.
In summary, both modalities are useful—choosing the appropriate one depends on the clinical presentation and desired therapeutic outcome.
Next Steps
Book your online consultation to know the cause of pain. According take the treatment.
Application of IFT will be helpfull but maintaining proper posture and important factor to reduce pain and stiffness.
Let me know what is the issue you are suffering with?
Hi, I am Dr. Dharshan N. A, MBBS, MD. PMR Consultant in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Fellowship in Interventional Pain Management.
For upper and mid-back pain, both TENS and IFT are mainly used for symptomatic relief, but they do not treat the root cause. If TENS did not help in 7 days, shifting to IFT is reasonable, but improvement depends on the underlying diagnosis (muscle spasm, posture-related strain, myofascial trigger points, disc issues, etc.).
IFT is generally more effective than TENS for deeper muscle pain and spasm, but the most important part of treatment is:
✔️ Postural correction
✔️ Strengthening of upper back, scapular and core muscles
✔️ Stretching of tight muscle groups
✔️ Ergonomic modification
Traction is not routinely needed for upper/mid-back pain unless there is a specific indication.
If pain persists despite modalities, please get evaluated by a PMR specialist so we can identify the actual cause and give a structured rehabilitation plan.
There can be so many reason for your pain and helping you choose one machine like this is just ethically wrong, not every pain needs modalities . It purely depend on detailed assessment, visit a good near by physiotherapy clinic or take An online consultation with me. I Am a women’s health and back pain specialist so i think i can help you. Please consult a good doctor.
Any electrotherapy modality will not treat the root cause of your pain. The best thing to treat your pain is exercise and some manual therapy.for details book an appointment.
Next Steps
You should do some upper back and middle back mobility exercises.and give some hot pack for 10 mins ,3times/daily.
