Panic Attacks Breathing Difficulty
I am a 26-year-old male. I have been experiencing frequent panic attacks. During these episodes, my blood pressure suddenly rises to a very high level, and I feel intense anxiety. I also have mucus/phlegm in my chest, which makes it difficult to breathe and often increases my panic. Sometimes I feel chest tightness and discomfort while breathing. Because of these symptoms, I am worried whether this is only due to anxiety and panic attacks or if there could also be a lung, heart, or blood pressure problem. Please advise what tests I should get done and which specialist I should consult. I would also like to know the best treatment to control these panic attacks and improve my breathing.

Consult a respiratory medicine doctor first. They might help with phlegm and breathing difficulties. If panic symptoms persist then consult a psychiatrist for medicine. Seek clinical psychologist consultation along with psychiatric medication. Would be most effective for your case
Next Steps
seek respiratory medicine doctor with MD.

It is completely normal and understandable to feel worried when experiencing panic attacks and breathing difficulties, as symptoms like chest tightness, a racing heart, and a sudden spike in blood pressure naturally trigger fear and make you worry about your physical health. When chest discomfort disrupts your breathing, it creates a scary cycle where physical feelings worsen your anxiety, making the fear feel very real. Counseling can help break this cycle by teaching you how your mind and body react to stress, giving you practical breathing and grounding exercises to regain control during an attack, and helping you reframe alarming thoughts so you feel calm, safe, and supported.

Hi thanks for reaching out Panic attacks can cause sudden high BP, chest tightness, and breathlessness. However, since you also have chest discomfort and mucus, don’t assume it’s only anxiety. Consult a physician first. They may advise an ECG, BP evaluation, routine blood tests, and a chest X-ray if needed. Based on the results, you may be referred to a cardiologist or pulmonologist. If medical causes are ruled out, CBT and, if needed, medication are highly effective for panic attacks. Your symptoms could be related to panic attacks or anxiety, but chest tightness, breathing difficulty, and changes in blood pressure should not be assumed to be anxiety alone. It is important to consult a physician or cardiologist to rule out any heart or lung conditions. Once medical causes have been evaluated, the anxiety and panic symptoms can be addressed effectively.
Next Steps
I recommend booking a consultation with me so we can assess your panic attacks in detail, identify the triggers, and create a personalized treatment plan. Therapy, especially CBT, is highly effective for panic attacks and can help you regain control over your anxiety and improve your quality of life.

Hi, thank you for sharing your concern. It must be very distressing to experience frequent panic attacks along with chest tightness, difficulty breathing, and fear about your health. Sometimes anxiety and panic attacks can cause symptoms such as chest discomfort, rapid heartbeat, increased blood pressure, and shortness of breath. However, since you are also experiencing chest tightness and breathing difficulty, it is important to rule out any underlying medical condition. I would suggest consulting a physician or cardiologist for a clinical evaluation, and if required, they may advise appropriate investigations. At the same time, consulting a counselling psychologist trained in CBT can help you understand the panic cycle, reduce anxiety, and learn effective strategies to manage panic attacks. If your chest pain, severe breathlessness, or symptoms become sudden or intense, seek immediate medical attention. You don’t have to handle this alone. Take one step at a time. Take care. It seems to be panicky disorder along with anxiety issues. It needs to be treated asap otherwise it may get complicated and can affect your personal and social life. It needs to be addressed in a holistic approach for complete recovery. It can be well treated with counseling sessions and homeopathic medicine effectively and without any side effects. You need an expert psychologist who is a good homeopathic physician.

I’m so sorry to hear that you’re going through this. It sounds very distressing, and I can understand how overwhelming these episodes must feel. While anxiety and panic can cause many of the symptoms you’ve described, it’s important to have a medical evaluation to rule out any underlying physical causes. Once those are addressed or excluded, working with a mental health professional can help you better understand and manage these experiences. Please know that with the right support, these symptoms are treatable, and you don’t have to go through this alone. Take care, Ruhi Jain Psychologist

Hi I'm sorry to hear that you're going through these difficulties. Panic attacks can cause symptoms such as a sudden rise in blood pressure, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and a feeling of losing control. However, because you are also experiencing breathing difficulty and chest discomfort, it is important not to assume that anxiety is the only cause. I would recommend consulting a physician/internal medicine specialist first for a clinical evaluation. Based on your examination results, consulting a clinical psychologist would be beneficial if further evaluation is required.

Take lot of warm fluids also 5 litres of warm water, it helps to calm down the nervous system. For phlegm in the chest, consult general physician , they ll help rectify the chest congestion with medicines. Both these will lower your anxiety physically and to cope up psychologically you have to address the anxiety by venting out with a counselling psychologist. Get general health check up done for assurance that your lung, heart and blood pressure is normal. Take care of your health. :)

When you experience a panic attack, your brain activates the "fight-or-flight" response, flooding your body with adrenaline. This instantly causes your blood pressure to spike, your chest muscles to tighten, and your breathing to shallow. However, because you have physical mucus and phlegm, it is highly likely that a mild physical respiratory issue is acting as the initial trigger.
Next Steps
I would suggest first consult with your   physician for clinical evaluation and along with psychologist..

Panic attacks can cause symptoms like chest tightness, breathlessness, and a temporary rise in blood pressure. However, since you’re also experiencing chest discomfort and difficulty breathing, it’s important to first consult a physician to rule out any underlying heart or lung conditions. If medical causes are excluded, a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist can assess and treat panic attacks through therapy and, if required, medication. With the right treatment, these symptoms are highly manageable.
Next Steps
