Do's & Don’t of the Pediatric Dental Care Ensure that your child's primary teeth stay healthy and free of decay and other dental problems. Good oral hygiene starts as early as infancy. Whether you're nursing or bottle feeding, you should begin incorporating some type of dental hygiene regimen ASAP. Do’s: 1. Age 0-1: Wipe the gums with gauze or wet soft cloth. 2. Age 1-2: Assisted tooth brushing using small headed tooth brush 3. Age 2-3: First dental visit, professional plaque cleanup (if required). 4. Every year fluoride application is must. Fluoride helps, arrest tooth decay and make them resistant to cavities 5. Inculcate a habit of brushing at night. 6. As a general rule for quantity of toothpaste ages 0-2: grain of rice, ages 2-6: pea sized Don’t: 1. Never let your child sleep while nursing or with milk/juice in the bottle. (Make sure the child drink some water before sleep. It would be advised to clean his gums/teeth or at least rinse before bedtime). 2. Abstaining from food rich in sugar and starch is recommended. 3. Avoid eating sticky food like wafers/ cookies/ biscuits at night. 4. If milk is to be given at night, give it before dinner. 5. Don’t instruct or order your child to brush at night, if you don’t brush. (Your child see you as their role models), instead enjoy brushing with them.
