Look Vit D is a fat soluble vitamin which accumulates in body. It is produced in body from cholesterol on sun exposure. So because of change in our life style lot many of us are deficient in vitamin D. It’s always better to get serum vitamin D levels i.e. 25(OH) Vit D3 levels checked before starting supplementation as overdose can cause toxicity. The supplemented dose largely depends on initial serum vitamin D level and bony changes in children.
Sun exposure to produce daily requirement (not correction of deficiency) in Pune is around 45 mins from 11 am to 3 pm which is practically not possible and dietary sources don’t have adequate vitamin D.
So it is advisable to visit your pediatrician with serum vitamin D levels. He will examine your child for rickets and other bony changes and will advise you accordingly.
