Nasal Septum Deviation and Nasal Polyps
Hi doctor, I'd like to ask you about the relationship between a deviated nasal septum, nasal polyps and dust allergy. Does having a permanent dust allergy worsen nasal polyps over time? I'm sensitive to dust which causes me to sneeze excessively and block my nose pretty much completely. The deviated nasal septum worsens this situation and makes it almost impossible to breathe. The nasal polyps too obstruct the nasal pathway, making it challenging to breathe, sleep, etc. I've been using OTC nasal sprays to relieve some of this congestion, but I've been experiencing rebound congestion as a result. I would want to not continue using a nasal spray but I have no other choice but to use it, if I am to breathe easier. I'm also starting to notice my insensitivity to mild smells. Do you think a septoplasty and nasal polyp removal is a last resort step for me, or could there be a non surgical operation to pursue? If the surgery is unavoidable, how long would recovery take?

There’s a relation between dust allergy and polyp formation, however deviated septum is a co existing problem which as you rightly said contributes to nasal obstruction along with the polyps. Polyps need removal with surgery and then avoid reformation by avoiding exposure and use of nasal sprays. The nasal sprays used for allergy are NOT SAME as the ones you are probably using ( they do not cause rebound congestion) kindly do not use anything without a consult. Surgery is unavoidable if your symptoms are severe and you seek long term relief. Post surgery you need rest for about a week and then you can resume your work ( except physical exertion) * depends on type and extent of surgery and recovery speed which varies from person to person
