Dear Sir/ Madam, Lumbar disc surgery is one of the most common surgeries done by Neurosurgeons. Disc surgery and back surgery have a bad name since in the past, the ability to establish site and nature of the problem was not there. Technology was not available to see the discs and nerve roots clearly. Now with MRI easily available, the offending disc is seen clearly. Image intensifiers (C-arms) are available in most operating theaters to pinpoint area of surgery. Operating microscopes and loupes are available to increase magnification, making disc surgery safer.
Next Steps
In case you are doubtful about the nature of surgery offered, you can take a second opinion from another reputed Neurosurgeon in your area.
Health Tips
Medications only fool the nerves and brain into forgetting the pain. There is no effective medication or physical therapy anywhere which can make the disc prolapse alright. Either nature has to decrease the swelling in 4-6 weeks (which is claimed as their own cure by wily practitioners of alternative medicine) or the disc has to be operated. Sometimes, disc surgery can be an emergency or semi-emergency if there is already some weakness or numbness. In such cases, early surgery prevents permanent damage to the nerve and prevents irreversible paralysis.
